Imagine Vancouver’s downtown cityscape transformed into a lush miniature of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Enter the Gardens of Babylon Balcony Challenge and beautify your balcony. A workshop teaching planting techniques for balcony gardens will be offered this fall at the Roundhouse. So get out your gardening gloves and enter!

Contest registration closes November 30, 1998 and is open to all residents of downtown Vancouver. Pick up a registration form at the Roundhouse or call (604) 713-1800. Judging will be through photo submission to the Douglas College Institute of Urban Ecology.

Deadline for photos is May 15, 1999. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Troughs, Pots, Wall Plantings, Hanging Baskets, Cascades and Window Boxes. Winners will have their balconies profiled in the Douglas College Institute of Urban Ecology newsletter, The Green Link.

New neighbours are moving into the elegant, new residences that make up the Columbus. With its 21-storey tower, anchored by an eight-storey terraced building at the water’s edge and surrounded by two-storey townhome villas, the Columbus has a variety of living options for everyone.

The location is superb - right on the waterfront overlooking the seawall walkway and out to English Bay, and just a few short steps from the Dorothy Lam Children’s Centre. And in the very near future, the Concord Pacific Place Presentation Centre, located next door to the Columbus, will make way for the first primary school planned for the area.

Conceived by architect James Hancock, the Columbus was designed to take advantage of southern-exposed views from the large decks, capturing every moment from sunrise to sunset. Interiors were designed by Mitchell Freedland with landscaping by Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg Inc.

If you’d like to learn more about the Columbus, visit the Presentation Centre at 150 Drake Street, (604) 899-8800. Or visit the web site at www.concordpacific.com for complete details and plans.

With the installation of Buster Simpson’s "Brush With Illumination" in the waters of False Creek, the Roundhouse area’s public art program is now complete and ready for viewing.

More than just sculpture, Brush With Illumination also delivers a real time look at the weather, wind and tide changes on the waterfront.

Beach volleyball made its sporting debut in the summer of ‘98 at the new Urban Beach at Concord Pacific Place. Located along the waterfront between Coopers’ Park and the Plaza of Nations, the Urban Beach offers eight sand courts created with 550 metric tonnes of washed sand dumped by 14 trucks, spread 15 centimetres deep. Hugely successful, the Vancouver Volleyball League’s program at the Urban Beach attracted over 75 teams of six players each from around Vancouver.

"We want this venue to be a real asset to the neighbourhood and encourage community groups to make use of the Urban Beach on weekends for fund-raising activities," says Jennifer Eberts, co-founder of Vancouver Sport and Social Clubs which operates the Vancouver Volleyball League.

For more information about joining a team or developing a community event, contact the Vancouver Volleyball League at (604) 879-9800. The Urban Beach operates July through September.
